Online shopping is genuinely convenient, and most of the time it works exactly as it should. But not every website that looks like a shop is a real one. Some are set up specifically to collect card details and disappear. Knowing a few simple checks before you pay can save a significant amount of trouble, and none of the checks take more than a minute.
Check the Web Address Before You Pay ¶
Look at the address bar at the top of your browser before entering any payment details. A genuine shopping site will have an address that starts with 'https://' and shows a small padlock icon. The padlock means the connection is encrypted. It does not guarantee the site is legitimate, but its absence is a clear warning sign. Also check that the address matches the shop's name exactly. A site selling goods as 'Amazon' but with an address like 'amazon-deals-jp.net' is not Amazon.
Search for the Shop's Name Before You Buy ¶
Before buying from a shop you have not used before, search for its name plus the word 'review' or 'scam' in a search engine. Genuine shops have reviews on independent sites. Fake shops often have no reviews at all, or a cluster of very recent five-star reviews that all sound similar. If you cannot find any independent information about a shop, that is a reason to be cautious.
Use a Credit Card Rather Than a Debit Card ¶
When shopping online, a credit card gives you more protection than a debit card if something goes wrong. Credit card companies in Japan have dispute processes that can recover money paid to fraudulent sellers. Debit card payments come directly from your bank account and are harder to recover. If you do not have a credit card, some banks offer prepaid cards that work online and limit your exposure to the amount loaded onto the card.
What SafeNet Protect Checks When You Shop ¶
When you visit a shopping website, SafeNet Protect checks it against a database of sites that have been reported as fraudulent or suspicious. If the site appears on the list, you see a calm alert before you reach the payment page. The alert does not prevent you from continuing if you choose to, but it gives you the information to make that decision yourself. Most members find this check reassuring even when the site turns out to be fine.
Most online shopping goes smoothly. These checks are not about being fearful, they are about being informed. A 30-second check before paying is a reasonable habit for anyone, at any age. If you want to know more about our plans and pricing and how SafeNet Protect fits into your shopping routine, we are happy to talk it through.
